Around Albany

Living in Albany

Our residents live all over the Capital District! Most within a 15 minute drive of the hospital in downtown Albany, or the surrounding suburbs of Bethlehem, Delmar, Colonie, and East Greenbush. Some commute from the neighboring City of Troy (home of Uncle Sam!), while other chose to live in the rural southern Vermont area! Our residents have a good mix of renters and those that have purchased a home! The cost of living in Albany allows for a very comfortable living environment much less than other mid-sized cities. Getting in and out of the Capital District is easy via the NYS Thruway, Amtrak Rail, and several carriers from the Albany International Airport.

We are approximately 2.5 hours from New York City, 3 hours from Boston, and 3 hours from Montreal! We are also 3 hours from many coastal New England beaches and cities!

Entertainment

We have two professional event venues in downtown Albany, the MVP ARENA and THE EGG. They host live music, sporting events, and comedians on a regular basis. In the past year our residents have been the REMO physician backstage at the NCAA tournament, Fall Out Boy, Old Dominion, and Thomas Rhett, among others.

We also have multiple local venues with summer concert series like Alive at Five in downtown Albany with bands from all over, like the cover band Let's Sing Taylor!

Just 10 minutes from Albany in Troy, NY you will find the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall where Comedian Taylor Tomlinson recently performed.

We also have a large outdoor event venue, SPAC which is perfect for summer concerts like Post Malone, Dave Matthews Band, Walker Hayes and more!

Just north of us you will find the Saratoga Race track, NYRA, in beautiful, historic Saratoga Springs, NY that hosts many races including the annual Travers Stakes

Family Friendly

New York's Capital District is an excellent place for family life. With AMC being in a mid-sized city, residents, fellows, and attendings enjoy the choice of urban, suburban, and rural living. Many of the state's highest rated public schools are in the Capital District. Most communities enjoy easy access to grocery stores, clothing stores, as well as unique shops and major box stores. Museums, gyms, parks & playgrounds, restaurants, and sports venues are plentiful throughout the area. The lower cost of living in the Capital District allows many AMC employees to own their homes. AMC even has its own year-round child care center!

We also are close in proximity to several higher education institutions such as trade schools, community colleges, and universities!

The Great Outdoors

One of the biggest draws to Albany, NY is the endless surrounding outdoor beauty and activities. We are often found exploring the miles of trails at Thacher State Park, kayaking or boating on Saratoga Lake and The Great Sacandaga Lake, or taking a weekend trip to Lake George. We are also lucky to be near the base of the 6 million acre Adirondack Park. Our residents enjoy biking and running along the river on the Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail.

Looking for a fun day trip? Consider exploring the Appalachian trail in the Berkshire mountains or the lively Hudson Valley Region. You'll find plenty of wineries, shops, and restaurants in the charming small villages along the way.

In the winter months we have a ski club with residents and attendings who ski and snowboard close by favorites including Jiminy Peak in Massachusetts, Hunter Mountain, and Gore Mountain NY,  or take weekend trips to nearby Vermont.

There are also many seasonal activities such as golf, white water rafting, climbing, and mountain biking.
